A group of seven alleged members of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind targeting locations in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
