Jair Bolsonaro taken into custody after being considered a risk of fleeing

Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's transfer to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, the capital city, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist US President Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also requested that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

The former president was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, many his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The judges found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the time, the legal team called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
